Solution Solar Battery
Every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter climb after dinner, when the oven, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater all ran together. Since installing a 10-kWh solar battery last spring, that routine has changed. Our panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the stored power carries us through the expensive evening period.
The difference is most obvious on my time-of-use bill. Before the battery, our household regularly used 8–10 kWh from the grid between 4 and 9 p.m. Last month, that dropped to just under 2 kWh. Our total bill fell from about $185 to $112, even though we had a few cloudy days. It is not a magical zero bill, but saving roughly $70 each month feels very real. I also like seeing the app show solar production, battery state of charge, and grid consumption without having to guess what is happening.
I did have one mildly stressful moment during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 62% overnight. I assumed something was wrong, but the inverter displayed a reserve setting I had accidentally enabled during setup. After lowering the backup reserve to 20%, it worked normally. I kept that reserve because short outages are common here, and I want the refrigerator and Wi-Fi to stay on.
That small setting taught me to spend more time understanding the system than blaming the solar battery. The installation itself was straightforward, but learning how the inverter prioritizes self-consumption versus backup took a couple of evenings. For my home, residential energy storage has been less about chasing energy independence and more about making ordinary electricity use cheaper and calmer. I still check the battery app most mornings, but I no longer obsess over every percentage. I would make the same practical choice again without much hesitation.
