Solution Solar Battery
After last summer, I finally installed a home solar battery with my rooftop panels, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during expensive evening hours. The unit is a 13.5-kWh battery powerwall style system, mounted in our garage. Setup was less intimidating than I expected: the installer handled the electrical work, and I spent an afternoon learning the monitoring app and backup settings.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, our solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we still pulled power from the grid after dinner. Now the battery charges from surplus solar during the day and runs the refrigerator, heat pump, lights, and dishwasher overnight. I switched the dishwasher timer to 7 p.m., which sounds minor, but it lets me use stored energy instead of peak-rate electricity.
My first full month with the solar battery cut our bill from about $185 to $72. It was a mild month, so I am not pretending those numbers will repeat every season, but the daily savings are obvious on the app. Watching grid consumption drop after sunset has been oddly satisfying.
One evening, the battery stopped discharging even though it showed 48%. I initially assumed the inverter had failed, but the app reported a reserve setting had been raised to 50% after a software update. I lowered the backup reserve to 20%, restarted the system, and discharge resumed within a few minutes. That small scare taught me to check settings before calling support.
I now keep 30% reserve for outages and let the battery cycle lower overnight. During a recent two-hour outage, it powered our Wi-Fi, refrigerator, several lights, and my office monitor without drama. It did not run the oven, which is exactly what I expected from this battery storage setup. For me, the value is clear.
