I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity.
The physical setup was easier than I expected, although getting the settings right took patience. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and configured it to charge from the solar panels during the day. I asked him to leave grid charging disabled except during emergencies, because my goal was to use surplus solar instead of sending most of it back for a small export credit.
The battery’s monitoring app quickly became my favorite part. On sunny days, my panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. Around 4 p.m., when cooking, lights, and the heat-pump water heater start adding demand, the battery takes over automatically. Before installation, those evening hours were responsible for a surprisingly large part of my bill. My first full month showed roughly a 35 percent reduction, and the savings have been better during bright summer weather.
I also learned not to obsess over every percentage point. The battery sometimes stops charging at 98 or 99 percent, and that is normal balancing behavior. I initially worried that something was wrong, especially after reading the label “lifepo4 bms 16s” in the configuration menu. After checking the battery manual, I understood that the BMS was protecting the 16-cell pack and balancing individual cell voltages. The system resumed normal operation without any intervention.
The most practical improvement is that I now use stored solar energy during peak-rate hours instead of thinking about when to run the dishwasher. Overnight, the battery usually reaches its reserve setting, leaving enough backup for short outages but still providing useful savings. It has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made the bill far more predictable. For me, that combination of solar self-consumption, quiet operation, and simple monitoring has made the battery worthwhile.
