Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running our solar battery system through its first summer has changed how I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10kWh lithium battery alongside a growatt 10kw single phase inverter, mainly to avoid buying power during evening peak hours. Before that, our air conditioner, induction cooktop, and water heater all seemed to switch on at the worst time.
The installation took one day. The installer fitted the hybrid inverter, battery cabinet, and monitoring meter. I especially like the app: it shows battery state of charge, solar production, and household consumption without a trip to the garage. My only annoyance was the initial Wi-Fi connection dropping repeatedly. Resetting the router and moving the inverter dongle closer solved it, although I wasted an evening troubleshooting.
The biggest practical difference appears between 4pm and 9pm. On sunny days, the solar panels charge the battery by early afternoon. I set it to discharge during peak hours. Instead of exporting cheap midday energy and buying expensive electricity later, we use stored solar power for dinner, laundry, and cooling. My daily grid usage has fallen noticeably, and our monthly bill is usually 30–40% lower than last summer, even with heavier air conditioner use.
One evening the battery stopped discharging at 58%. I worried something had failed, but the app showed a backup reserve setting changed during a firmware update. Restoring the reserve to 20% fixed it immediately. Now I check software updates before changing settings.
For me, the value is not total energy independence. I still use the grid on cloudy days and pay a connection fee. The benefit is predictable peak-hour savings and knowing evening appliances run from stored solar energy. After several months, the battery feels like an ordinary part of home life rather than a gadget I constantly monitor. Evenings now feel far more predictable.
