Home battery storage has changed the way I use electricity more than I expected. Before installing it, my rooftop solar panels sent a lot of surplus power back to the grid during the afternoon, while I bought expensive electricity after dinner.

I chose a 10-kWh LiFePO4 battery after comparing warranties and prices. I was tempted by a cheap lifepo4 battery listing online, but I ultimately picked a unit with a proper battery management system, local support, and a realistic cycle rating. The installer mounted it in my garage beside the inverter. Setup took most of a day, including updating the solar monitoring app and changing the inverter settings for time-of-use charging.

The biggest difference appears between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. On sunny days, the panels charge the battery to nearly full by early afternoon. Then the battery runs my refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and often the dishwasher while rates are highest. My evening grid consumption fell by roughly 7 to 9 kWh daily. That usually saves me about $2 to $3 per day in peak charges, or around $65 a month. My utility bill is not zero because I still pay connection fees and buy power during several cloudy winter days, but the change is obvious.

One small troubleshooting moment happened during a heatwave. The battery stopped discharging overnight, and the app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway, checked the ethernet cable, and found the inverter had rebooted after a brief outage. After restarting it and updating firmware, normal operation returned. It was annoying, but I appreciated seeing the battery management system shut down safely instead of guessing blindly.

Capacity retention still looks very good.
