Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10kWh home battery last summer, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity from the grid between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime usage, but before the battery, the dishwasher, heat-pump water heater, and cooking pushed our evening bill higher.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the lithium battery beside the inverter, connected it to the main panel, and configured a 20% reserve for outages. I chose a LiFePO4 battery because I wanted a safer chemistry and a long cycle life, not the cheapest storage option. The app was useful: I could see solar generation, household load, battery charging, and grid import in near real time.
The biggest practical difference appears on sunny days. By late afternoon, the battery is usually around 95%, then it carries the house through dinner and bedtime. During July, our peak-hour grid consumption fell from roughly 9 kWh per day to 1 or 2 kWh. That reduced our monthly bill by about $65, although the savings depend heavily on weather and utility rates. I still import power overnight in winter, so I do not pretend the battery makes us energy independent.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its programmed time. Restarting the inverter did nothing, but the app showed that backup reserve had somehow changed to 80%. Returning it to 20% fixed the issue, and support confirmed the update had reset that setting.
For anyone comparing battery prices, search listings can be confusing. One product title I encountered included “lifepo4 320ah batterylifepo4 320ah,” which looked like a duplicated keyword rather than useful technical information. I would pay more attention to usable capacity, warranty, inverter compatibility, and installation quality. For me, peak-rate savings—not the flashy app—has made solar storage worthwhile.
