Owning my home battery has changed the way I think about electricity, especially during those expensive evening hours. My main reason was peak-hour savings. Before battery storage, my utility routinely pulled power from 4pm to 9pm, when rates were highest. Now, the battery charges from the panels through late morning and early afternoon. Once it reaches about 95%, I set it to discharge during that evening window. On sunny days, I get through dinner, laundry, and most of the evening without buying much electricity from the grid.
That change cut my bill by roughly 30% in the first full month, despite running the heat pump more often. The exact amount varies with weather and how much power we use, but seeing less grid consumption at peak rate is satisfying. I check the app maybe twice a week, not obsessively. The useful screen shows solar production, battery state of charge, inverter output, and grid import in plain language.
My one minor troubleshooting moment came during a cloudy week in November. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, although the app seemed to say it should continue. I initially blamed the inverter, but the system's backup reserve had accidentally been set to 20% after a software update. Lowering that reserve to 15% solved it immediately. I now keep 20% when storms are forecast, since I value emergency backup power more than squeezing out the last few dollars of savings.
Overall, this solar battery has been quiet, predictable, and practical. It does not eliminate my bill.
