I installed a solar energy storage battery last summer, mainly because our electricity bill jumped whenever the air-conditioner ran after sunset. We already had rooftop solar panels, but without storage, most of the afternoon generation was exported for much less than the evening tariff.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its scheduled time. The app showed “standby,” even though the charge level was healthy. I restarted the inverter once, checked the time-of-use schedule, and discovered the update had reset my peak hours. After restoring the schedule, everything worked normally. That incident taught me not to treat the monitoring app as decoration; I check it regularly, especially before a heatwave.

I am not completely off-grid, and the battery does not eliminate my electricity bill. Still, it makes our solar system feel much more predictable. For me, the biggest benefit is using power I generated at home instead of buying it back during the costliest hours. If I expand later, I will add capacity only after checking our actual nighttime usage, rather than choosing the largest battery available.
