Very glad I finally added a home battery to my rooftop solar setup this spring. Before that, my panels generated plenty during the day, but I was still buying expensive electricity after dinner, exactly when our household needed it most. I chose a 12V 280Ah LiFePO4 battery built with an eve 280ah lifepo4 eu lag cell because the capacity seemed right for our evening loads and the supplier provided a sensible warranty.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician mounted the battery in the utility room, added a hybrid inverter, and fitted proper DC fuses and a battery isolator. He also set the state-of-charge reserve to 20 percent so I would not accidentally empty it during a cloudy spell.
The first week taught me that battery settings matter more than nameplate capacity. My inverter originally started grid charging at midnight, even though solar forecasts showed sun the next morning. That defeated the point of using cheap overnight power. I changed the schedule and enabled solar priority after a quick call with support. Now the battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon, then carries us through cooking, laundry, and the television.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 pm. Before storage, those hours cost me roughly 70 to 90 cents each evening, depending on usage. Now most of that consumption comes from stored solar. My monthly bill has fallen by about 35 percent, not zero, because winter days are short and we still import power during long cloudy periods.
I did have one small scare. During a hot afternoon, the inverter showed a battery temperature warning and stopped charging. I checked the ventilation gap and found a cardboard box leaning against the cabinet. Removing it cleared the warning within minutes.
