Nearly a year ago, I added a 10-kWh lithium solar battery to my system because evenings were expensive. My panels already covered most daytime demand, but after dinner the house would pull power from the grid for several hours. The battery has made that pattern noticeably less painful.
On a weekday, I watch the battery charge from about 9:30 a.m. onward, once the panels are producing more than the fridge, router, and loads need. It usually reaches full by mid-afternoon. I set the system to reserve 20%, so there is backup capacity if the grid drops. Around 4 p.m., my inverter huawei switches the house over to stored energy, and the changeover is quiet.
The most satisfying difference is during peak pricing. Before the battery, our evening usage pushed the daily bill up by roughly $2 to $3. Now, dinner, cooking, and the dishwasher mostly run on solar battery power. My monthly bill has fallen by about $55 during brighter months. That number changes with weather, of course; cloudy weeks still require grid electricity, and I do not pretend the battery eliminates the bill.
I did have one troubleshooting moment once. The battery stopped discharging at 9 p.m., even though the app showed 48% remaining. I checked the settings and found a “backup reserve” update had reset the discharge limit to 50%. After lowering it back to 20%, the system resumed within a few minutes. It was not dramatic, but it taught me to check the mode before blaming hardware.
For me, the benefit is not energy independence. It is using my own solar generation later, when electricity costs most. I still keep a grid connection and occasionally buy power, but the solar battery does the expensive evening work. After twelve months, I would make the same choice again, especially for households with predictable loads for our family too.
