6 months ago, I added a 10kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system, mostly because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings. Before the battery, the inverter shut down around sunset, and we bought power during expensive peak hours. Now it stores our midday solar surplus and carries the house through dinner, laundry, and the late-night heat-pump cycle.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon. I have programmed it to discharge from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., when our utility’s rates are highest. That simple schedule has made the biggest difference to our bill. My monthly electricity cost fell from roughly $180 in summer to between $75 and $95, even though we still run air-conditioning. In milder months, the bill sometimes lands near $45.
I did spend too long comparing the “160ah battery price” listings online. A 160Ah battery is not automatically the right match for every home; usable capacity, inverter compatibility, battery chemistry, warranty, and installation labor matter more than the headline number. My installer recommended lithium iron phosphate because it tolerates daily cycling and does not need the ventilation that my old lead-acid setup required.
I also asked for a battery monitoring app, and that has been surprisingly useful. One rainy evening, the system showed 18 percent remaining even though the forecast promised enough solar for the next day. I checked the app and found the battery had stopped charging because its reserve setting was accidentally set to 20 percent. Lowering the reserve to 10 percent fixed it, and the next sunny day restored normal charging. It was a minor troubleshooting moment, but I appreciated solving it myself instead of calling someone out.
For me, the battery mainly shifts excess solar into cheaper evening hours, and that has paid off.
