2 summers ago, I installed a 12v 200ah solar battery in my garage to store excess energy from my rooftop solar panels. My main goal was simple: use more of my own electricity after sunset instead of buying it from the grid during expensive evening hours.
The difference showed up quickly on my bill. Before adding battery storage, our household regularly used the grid between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., especially while cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging devices. Now, the inverter switches to battery power shortly before dinner. On a typical sunny day, the battery carries most of our evening load until around midnight. Our monthly electricity bill has dropped by roughly 25 to 35 percent, depending on the weather and how much heating or cooling we use.
I also like being able to check the solar battery monitor from my phone. It shows charging, household consumption, and remaining capacity in a way that is easy enough to understand. I’m not constantly watching it, but the information helped me change a few habits. For example, I run the washing machine during daylight hours when the solar panels are producing power, leaving more stored energy for nighttime use.
The only real hiccup happened during a stretch of cloudy weather. The battery reached its low-voltage cutoff earlier than expected, and the system switched back to grid power. At first I thought the battery had failed, but the monitoring app showed that several low-sun days had simply drained it. After adjusting the backup reserve and reducing unnecessary overnight loads, everything worked normally again.
For my home, this lithium battery setup has been most valuable as a peak-hour savings tool. It has not eliminated my electricity bill, but it has made solar power much more useful beyond daylight hours. I’m already considering adding another battery module before next summer.
