5pm is when my house usually changes over to battery power. Before installing my solar energy storage system, I barely noticed how much electricity I used after dinner. Now the inverter draws from the battery instead of the grid, and that small change has made my evening bills noticeably calmer.
I have eight rooftop solar panels and a 10kWh lithium battery mounted in the garage. The setup was not completely painless: the installer had to reroute a conduit around an awkward beam, and the monitoring app refused to pair on the first evening. Once the Wi-Fi connection was reset, the battery state-of-charge screen became easy to understand.
My utility has time-of-use pricing, so I set the battery to charge from midday solar and discharge between 4pm and 9pm. That schedule fits our routine surprisingly well. The dishwasher, induction cooktop, clothes dryer, and heat pump are the biggest evening loads in my home. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by lunchtime, then carries us through dinner without importing much power. My peak-hour usage fell from roughly 11kWh a day to 3kWh. The monthly bill dropped by about $38, which is more meaningful to me than impressive app graphs.
The most useful lesson came during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 30%, even though the house was drawing power. I initially thought the solar battery had failed. The app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally enabled while exploring backup mode. Lowering that reserve to 15% fixed the issue, and I appreciated that the system still kept emergency capacity instead of running flat. It was a minor troubleshooting moment, but it taught me to understand settings before blaming the hardware.
I also keep a small 25ah lifepo4 battery pack for camping lights and router backup.
