Replacing our aging gas-powered backup generator with a home battery was less dramatic than I expected. I mainly wanted to stop buying electricity during the expensive evening hours, and that is where my growatt 5kw es inverter has made the biggest difference. Our rooftop solar system is modest, just enough to cover daytime loads and charge the battery on sunny days. Before storage, I would send excess solar back to the grid and then pull it back at a much higher rate after dinner.
Most evenings, the battery takes over at around 4:30, just before our utility switches to peak pricing. I notice it most when cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging phones and laptops. The inverter quietly supplies those loads until about 10:30, when it returns to grid power. On a typical month, my bill has fallen by roughly $35–$50, depending on weather and how often we use the air conditioner. That is not a life-changing fortune, but it is predictable, and the battery has paid for itself in comfort as much as savings.
The only hiccup came during the first week. One morning, the monitoring app showed the battery at 12% even though we had enjoyed bright sunshine the day before. I checked the breaker and found that the battery isolator had been switched off accidentally while I was clearing boxes in the utility closet. After switching it back on, the system resumed charging normally. Since then, I have put a small label beside the isolator and stopped touching it. This sounds minor, but it taught me that even a mostly automatic solar battery system still needs a little human awareness.
I’m glad I chose storage rather than simply adding more panels. It makes household solar useful after sunset, exactly when we need it most on most evenings.
