Solution Solar Battery
After six months with a solar battery, I finally understand why my electricity bill used to feel so unpredictable. Our rooftop solar system produced plenty during the day, but we were still buying power every evening. Adding a battery for house solar changed that routine. The installer mounted a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage, connected it to our existing inverter, and set it to charge from solar first. The installation took most of a day, mostly because the electrician had to tidy old wiring rather than because of the battery itself.
The most noticeable difference is during peak hours. Our utility charges nearly triple the daytime rate between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. Before storage, I would watch the solar app show our panels exporting power at noon then see the house draw expensive electricity after dinner. Now the battery holds that midday energy and quietly runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater. On sunny days, we often reach 9:00pm with 20% remaining. On cloudy days, it is less impressive but still covers the expensive early evening period. My monthly bill fell from about $185 to $112 on average, even though the utility raised rates. That is roughly $73 saved each month, which feels more useful than the glossy efficiency claims I read before buying.
One annoyance came during a cloudy week in January. The battery stopped discharging at 6:30pm, even though the app showed 48% charge. I checked the breaker, restarted the monitoring gateway, and discovered a firmware update had switched the operating mode to backup reserve. Changing it back to self-consumption fixed the problem immediately. I appreciated that the support technician answered my call without trying to sell me anything. Since then, I keep the reserve at 15% for outages, rather than emptying it completely.
