Three months after adding a 10kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system, I finally stopped feeling like I was giving away the best electricity I generated.
Before the battery, my panels produced plenty during the day, but our household used most power after dinner. The excess went to the grid for a small credit, then I bought electricity back during expensive evening hours. That pattern showed up clearly on my bill.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, beside the existing string inverter, and added an energy meter to track household consumption. The crew finished in one afternoon, although I spent the first evening checking the app every few minutes like a nervous teenager with a new phone.
I set the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On sunny days, it usually reaches full charge by mid-afternoon. When the oven, dishwasher, and heat pump start together, I can see the battery supplying power instead of pulling it from the grid. That change has been the biggest practical improvement.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $85 during the first full month, even though weather was similar. The savings are not identical every month; cloudy weeks still require grid electricity, and winter heating eats more energy. Still, shifting solar power into peak hours saves about $70 to $90 monthly for us, which feels more useful than exporting every sunny afternoon.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 100 percent while the inverter reported standby. I turned off the backup circuit as instructed by support, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The readings matched again, and support followed up the next day.
