I installed my first solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My setup uses a victron multiplus 2 gx, lithium battery bank, and rooftop solar panels. I was nervous about the wiring, but the installer kept the process surprisingly straightforward. The battery cabinet went beside my garage wall, and the GX display quickly became my favorite screen to check household energy flow.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility charges its highest time-of-use rate. Before storage, I would run the dishwasher, heat pump, and induction cooker during those hours and watch the meter spin. Now the solar battery carries most of that load. On a typical sunny day, panels fill the battery by early afternoon, then the inverter quietly switches us over after sunset.
My evening usage is still there, of course, but the costly grid import has dropped dramatically. Over the last six months, my average monthly bill fell from about $210 to $95, even after allowing for the battery's extra financing cost. That is roughly $115 saved each month, which feels more useful than impressive app graphs.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a storm, the system stopped charging and showed a low battery warning, although the state of charge was above 40 percent. I checked the battery isolator, restarted the inverter through the control panel, and everything recovered within a minute. It turned out to be a loose communication cable, not a failed battery. The installer replaced it the next morning and added a strain relief. Since then, the solar monitoring has been boring, which is exactly what I want.
I schedule heavy appliances for midday solar production, and I check the energy monitor weekly instead of obsessing over every small fluctuation.
