4:30 a.m. is when my solar battery earns its keep: the house is quiet, and the panels are already tucked away.
I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to avoid expensive evening grid electricity. The electrician mounted it in the garage, added a battery management system, and connected it to my existing rooftop solar array. The app showed everything immediately, although I spent an evening learning that “available” capacity is not the same as usable capacity.
I set a reserve of twenty percent, so there is still backup for a short outage. On sunny days, solar power runs the refrigerator, washing machine, and heat-pump water heater first. Once the battery reaches full charge, it stores the surplus instead of sending it back to the utility for almost nothing.
After 4:00 p.m., the battery discharges automatically, and that timing has made the biggest difference to my bill. My peak-hour rate is nearly triple the overnight rate, so I now cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and occasionally use the dryer without pulling much from the grid. Before storage, a normal summer bill was around $190. Now it averages $115, despite using the same appliances. That is roughly $75 saved monthly, and I notice the improvement more than any advertised payback calculator.
The battery has not been completely invisible, though. One week, after several cloudy days, its state of charge dropped faster than expected. I checked the cables, restarted the inverter app, and discovered a loose Wi-Fi connection was making the charge graph look wrong. The system itself was fine; reconnecting the router restored accurate readings within minutes.
I keep a small 12-volt setup; my 14.4v lifepo4 battery charger sits nearby for emergency garden lighting.
