battery to power house

After six months of using a home solar battery, I understand what people mean when they talk about energy independence. My 10-kWh battery is paired with a solar array, and the biggest difference has been how it handles our evening routine. By dinner time, the panels are done, but the battery to power house keeps the lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater running without pulling from the grid.

Before installing it, I was checking the app obsessively during peak hours. Now I charge the battery from solar during the day and set it to discharge between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, when electricity costs the most. Our evening usage averages around 8-kWh, so the battery covers all of it. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 in summer to about $75, although weather and rates vary.

The only hiccup came during a cloudy week in January. The battery reached its reserve limit earlier than expected, and I noticed the house switched back to grid power during dinner. At first I thought the solar panels had failed, but the monitoring screen showed normal operation. I had simply left the backup reserve at 30% instead of 15%. Lowering it restored more usable capacity, and now I keep 20% as a safety buffer.

That lesson changed how I think about battery storage. It is not magic backup power; it is a daily energy management tool. I check the state of charge once or twice a week, to make sure the inverter and app agree. During an outage, the transfer was fast enough that our router stayed online, though I would not run the oven and clothes dryer together on battery power. That limitation feels practical rather than disappointing; our system was sized to reduce bills first, not replace the grid.
