I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician added a hybrid inverter, a battery isolator, and a simple monitoring app, then spent most of the afternoon checking cable sizes and settings. I was especially relieved to see the lifepo4bms reporting balanced cell voltages on the first charge.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our oven, induction hob, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater all ran when solar production had already faded. On a typical summer day, my rooftop solar makes around 25 kWh. Instead of exporting most of the surplus for a low credit, the battery stores roughly 8 kWh and releases it after dinner. Our evening consumption is usually covered until bedtime, and the inverter switches over without any noticeable flicker.
My monthly bill fell from about $185 to $95 during the first full summer month. That number varies with weather and air-conditioning, but the practical saving is more important to me than the app’s colorful graphs: I no longer feel punished for using electricity when the family is actually home. I still import power overnight, especially after cloudy days, but peak-rate usage has nearly disappeared.
I did have one small scare. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at 60% state of charge. The monitoring screen showed no obvious fault, so I called the installer instead of changing random battery management system settings. They found the update had reset the minimum reserve to 60%, restored it to 20%, and normal operation returned immediately. I now keep that reserve at 30% because brief outages are common here.
So far, the battery has been quiet, cool, and boring—in the best possible way.
