Solution Solar Battery
Only last summer did I realize how much electricity our house used after sunset. We installed a solar power wall alongside a 9.6 kWh home battery, mainly to stop buying expensive grid power during the evening peak. The difference showed up in the first month.
Our utility charges the highest rate from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Before the battery, cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and charging my laptop during those hours pushed our bill uncomfortably high. Now the solar panels fill the battery through the afternoon, and the battery takes over when the sun goes down. On a normal weekday, it covers the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and dinner appliances without any interruption. Our monthly bill fell from about $210 to $128, although weather and our habits still matter. I notice the savings on sunny winter days, when the battery reaches 100% before lunch and carries us through most of the evening.
The app has been useful, but it did not make everything effortless. One night, the battery stopped discharging at 62% even though the house was drawing power. I checked the settings and found that backup reserve had somehow been set to 60%. Lowering it to 25% fixed the issue immediately. I felt foolish, but I appreciated that the explanation was visible instead of requiring a service call.
I am also happier with the quieter operation than I expected. I hear a faint click when the inverter changes modes, but no hum. We still depend on the grid during cloudy days in a row, so this is not energy independence. For me, though, this solar battery has made our solar investment feel practical: less peak-hour spending, backup protection, and fewer surprises on the bill. The biggest win is seeing stored solar energy do useful work every evening.
