I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. My rooftop solar already covered most daytime use, but our evening cooking, laundry, and heat-pump demand kept pushing the meter into peak rates. The battery stores roughly 9.6 usable kWh and charges from solar by mid-afternoon on clear days.
I chose a LiFePO4 unit—the installer’s paperwork actually called it “life po4”—because I wanted a long cycle life and a chemistry I could feel comfortable keeping in the garage. Setup was easier than I expected: the electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup panel, and configured the app in one afternoon.
The only surprise was how much the system depends on accurate load settings. During the first week, I noticed the battery sometimes stopped discharging at 20% state-of-charge even though the app showed plenty of solar earlier. A quick call revealed the backup reserve had been set too high for my usage. Lowering it to 10% fixed the issue without any firmware drama.
The real payoff appears between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On a sunny day, the battery carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and kitchen appliances through dinner and then tops up again the next morning. Before installation, my monthly summer bill averaged about $180, with roughly $70 of that coming from evening peak consumption. Since then, I usually see $105 to $120, depending on weather and utility credits. That is not a magical zero-dollar bill, but saving around $60 to $75 monthly feels very real. During a rainy stretch, solar production fell and the battery could not fully recharge, so the savings shrank. Still, the battery automatically avoided the highest time-of-use rates, which mattered more than I expected. That predictable evening coverage has made the battery worth it.
