I installed my solar battery storage system last spring, and the biggest change has been how I think about peak-hour electricity rates now. During sunny afternoons, my rooftop panels charge the battery instead of sending spare kilowatt-hour back to the grid. Once the sun goes down, the inverter draws from storage, so cooking, laundry, and evening heating run on solar energy I produced.
Before adding storage, our utility bill jumped because the expensive period started at 4:00 p.m. Last month, I used only 18% grid electricity during those peak hours, compared with nearly all of it the previous summer. My bill fell by about $74, although our household use was similar. It is not a dramatic payback story, but the monthly savings feel real, and the battery is doing useful work daily.
