I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last autumn, after watching my electricity bills climb despite having 4.5kW of rooftop solar. The quotation process was less intimidating than I expected: the installer checked my consumer unit, measured the wall space, and explained how the battery would charge from solar before exporting surplus. The physical installation took most of a day. The battery went beside the inverter, and the electrician labelled everything clearly. My winter bills have not vanished—short days and heating still cost plenty—but the monthly direct debit is usually £35–£50 lower than last winter.
I check the battery app occasionally, but do not constantly monitor it. On weekends, solar fills it by afternoon, and we cook dinner using stored energy instead of buying peak electricity. During a power cut, Wi-Fi stayed connected. It has not made us energy independent, but it makes our solar investment more useful. For me, proof is simple: I export less, buy less at peak rates, and feel less annoyed when sun sets.
