Over the past six months, my rooftop solar system has felt much more useful since I added a fortune lithium battery in the garage. Before that, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I was still buying electricity after dinner, especially on hot evenings when the air conditioner ran.

At first, installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted a 10-kWh home battery beside the inverter, updated the monitoring app, and showed me how to set a reserve level. I chose 20% because we sometimes lose power during winter storms. The only awkward part was waiting for permission from the utility; the physical work took most of a morning.

What I notice most is the change to peak-hour usage. My utility's expensive period starts at 4 p.m., so the battery charges from solar around lunchtime and starts discharging before supper. I can run the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and often the heat pump without pulling much from the grid. On my monthly bill, the biggest difference has been roughly $35 to $60, depending on weather. That's not a miracle, but it adds up, and it makes our solar investment feel practical rather than theoretical.

I did have one small troubleshooting moment. One evening, the app showed the battery at 6% even though the sun had been strong. I found a tripped breaker after the installer had enabled a new firmware setting. I reset it, waited ten minutes, and the battery resumed charging. Since then, I check the status screen every few days, but I have not needed another reset.

The battery is quiet, and I barely notice it except when the house switches to backup power during an outage. It will not run everything, so I keep the water heater and clothes dryer off the backup circuit now.
