I installed a lifeso4 100ah battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. Before that, my rooftop solar system exported an amount of power at lunchtime, then I paid the utility after dinner when rates were highest. The battery has changed that pattern more than I expected.

On a normal sunny day, the panels charge the battery to about 95 percent by mid-afternoon. Once the sun goes down, my inverter automatically switches the house to stored energy. I run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and the washing machine without drawing from the grid. I still use grid power for heavy loads, such as the oven and heat pump, but the expensive 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. window is now mostly covered by solar battery power.

My bill used to average around $180 in summer. Last July it was $92, even though we had a few hot weeks. That is not an apples-to-apples comparison, but the difference is obvious. The battery did not eliminate my bill; fixed charges and overnight usage remain. It simply moved my solar energy to the hours when it was worth more.

The useful feature has been the battery monitor app. I can see state of charge, solar production, and household consumption in real time. One evening, the app showed the battery draining fast. I discovered that a dehumidifier had been left running in the basement. Turning it off stabilized the overnight reserve.

I keep a 25 percent backup reserve for outages. During one storm interruption, the transfer was seamless enough that our lights barely flickered. I am glad I chose usable capacity over chasing an empty battery. For my home, this energy storage system is less about independence slogans and more about quietly reducing peak-hour costs every day.
