Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid.
Before the installation, my solar panels produced plenty during the day, but our household used most power after dinner. The frustrating part was watching the meter run faster just when rates increased.
The setup itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to my existing solar inverter, and programmed a reserve level of 20% for outages. I spent an afternoon checking the monitoring app and changing the discharge schedule so it would cover our utility’s peak window.
Now the battery charges from rooftop solar through the afternoon and starts powering the house at 4 p.m. On a normal weekday, it runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat pump until about 10 p.m. That change has cut my peak-hour electricity use noticeably. My monthly bill fell from around $185 to $112 during the first full month, even though the weather was similar.
I did have one small scare during the first week. The app showed “standby” while the battery was at 85%, and the house was drawing grid power. I checked the settings, restarted the gateway, and discovered the backup mode had been toggled off after a firmware update. Turning it back on fixed the issue immediately.
When I searched online for a “lithium ion battery for sale,” I quickly realized the cheapest quote was not necessarily the best value; warranty, usable capacity, and battery management software mattered more to me.
After six months, I am happiest that the system quietly does its job: less grid dependence, lower bills, and useful backup during brief outages too.
