Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying electricity during our utility’s expensive evening peak hours. Before that, my rooftop solar often sent power back to the grid at a low credit, then we bought it back after dinner at nearly triple the rate. The change has been surprisingly simple in daily use.
The battery charges from our solar after breakfast, and the app shows it gradually filling through the afternoon. Around 4:30 p.m., it switches to discharge automatically. I have not needed to change the schedule since installation. By the time we cook, wash dishes, and run the heat pump, most of the house is running on stored energy rather than grid power.
Our first full month with the solar battery cut the bill by about $68, compared with the same month last year. That number varies with cloudy weather and heating demand, but the biggest savings come from avoiding those peak rates. I also like having backup power. We had a short outage during a storm, and the lights, Wi-Fi, and refrigerator stayed on without any drama.
The only hiccup was a low-temperature warning one morning. The battery was in an unheated garage and the charging paused until the cells warmed up. I added a small insulated enclosure around the unit, leaving the manufacturer’s required ventilation clearance, and it has not happened again.
When I was shopping, I compared every lithium iron phosphate battery for sale listing I could find, but eventually chose a local installer with clear warranty support instead of the cheapest option. The peace of mind has mattered more than squeezing out the last dollar. My practical advice is to size the battery around your evening load, not your total daily consumption.
