280ah catl

8 months ago I installed a home solar battery after getting tired of watching our electricity bill jump every evening. My setup is fairly ordinary: rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and a 280ah catl battery bank in the garage. I am not an electrician, so a local installer handled the wiring, isolation switch, and battery settings. The whole installation took most of a day. What surprised me was how quiet it was. The battery cabinet makes a soft hum when charging, but I barely notice it from the kitchen.

Most of the benefit shows up during peak hours. Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so I programmed the battery to charge from excess midday solar and discharge between 4:30pm and 9pm. Before installing it, we often used expensive grid power while cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and doing laundry. Now the inverter covers much of that load automatically. On a sunny day, we reach evening with roughly 70% to 85% state of charge and finish around 25%. That routine has made the biggest difference to our bill. My first full month showed a reduction of about 38% compared with the same month last year. It is not a dramatic zero-bill result, but it is a noticeable saving every month.

The battery also changed how I think about outages. We had a short outage during a storm last winter, and the transfer was quick enough that our router and refrigerator stayed on. I did notice the lights flicker, so I later checked the backup reserve setting. It had been set too low for my comfort. I raised the minimum reserve from 15% to 25%, which slightly reduced daily savings but gave me more confidence. Since then, I have left it alone. No warning lights, just a system quietly doing its job.
