Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
After installing my rooftop solar panels, I spent several months wondering whether adding a battery used in solar panel systems was really worth the extra cost. My utility bills were already lower, but summer evenings still hurt because the house switched to grid power after sunset.
I chose a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery and had an electrician mount it in the garage beside the inverter. The physical installation was surprisingly tidy. The crew finished in an afternoon, labeled the shutoff clearly, and showed me the monitoring app before leaving. My only complaint was that the app took two days to display accurate state-of-charge readings.
The biggest difference appears between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. On sunny days, the panels charge the battery by early afternoon, and my dishwasher, induction cooktop, and air conditioner run from stored energy instead of expensive peak electricity. Before storage, my evening usage regularly pushed a daily bill charge of around $2.50. Now it is usually under a dollar, even when we cook dinner and do laundry after work.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 in July to $95, although weather and utility rates vary. I am not pretending the battery pays for itself overnight; my installer estimated about eight years. But the immediate comfort matters. I no longer check the clock before turning on the air conditioner.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a cloudy week, the battery stopped discharging at 30%. The app showed “backup reserve,” which I had accidentally set too high while exploring settings. Lowering the reserve to 15% restored normal operation that evening. I now leave the reserve at 20%, enough for a short outage without wasting much usable capacity.
For me, its nightly savings matter most; I would size storage around evening rates, not maximum capacity.
