I installed a home solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My system has 5 kW of rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and a 14 kWh LiFePO4 battery assembled from a “lifepo4 3.2v 280ah bausatz.” I chose this setup because I wanted something repairable and expandable rather than a sealed battery that would be difficult to understand.
The biggest difference showed up between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our cooking, lighting, television, and heat-pump use all came from the grid after the solar panels stopped producing. Now the battery charges during sunny hours and carries most of that evening load. On a typical summer day, I use roughly 8 kWh from storage and avoid the highest tariff. My electric bill has fallen by about 30 percent, although the exact savings depend heavily on weather and utility rates. I still buy power on cloudy winter days, so I would not describe the system as completely off-grid.
The practical detail I appreciate most is being able to check the battery state of charge from my phone. I can see the inverter switching from solar to battery and then to grid when the battery reaches its reserve level. I initially set that reserve too low, and one night the battery shut down before morning after several cloudy days. Nothing was damaged, but I raised the reserve from 10 to 25 percent, and the problem has not returned.
After several months, the LiFePO4 cells have remained balanced, and the battery management system has been quiet and reliable. I do hear the inverter fan briefly when the battery is charging hard, but it is not bothersome in the utility room. For me, the solar battery is less about total energy independence and more about using my own solar power when electricity costs the most. That everyday shift is where I notice the value.
