Every evening, I used to glance at the utility meter. Since adding a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a hybrid inverter, my routine has changed. The system charges from rooftop solar during the afternoon, then runs the house after sunset.
Before storage, peak-hour use was expensive. Dinner, lights, the refrigerator, and our heat pump all arrived when rates were highest. Now I set the battery to discharge between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. The monitoring app is useful. Each morning I check the state of charge and whether the battery reached reserve mode overnight. I keep a 20% backup reserve because short outages are common here. That means I occasionally buy a little grid power during a cloudy evening, but I prefer keeping some emergency capacity.
After eleven months, I saved around $620 on electricity. The biggest surprise is how quiet the battery is. I barely notice it working, except when the monthly bill arrives. For me, a home energy storage system is less about total energy independence and more about moving unavoidable consumption away from costly peak hours. That practical benefit has made the investment feel real.
