Running my home battery for six months has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed it mainly to avoid expensive evening power, not to chase technical bragging rights.
My rooftop solar system is modest, with a 6-kilowatt inverter and a 13.5-kWh lithium battery. The installer used prismatic lithium cells, and the whole wall-mounted unit looked surprisingly neat.
Setup took most of a day. They added a battery isolator, updated the monitoring app, and tested backup circuits. I kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and garage door on backup.
The biggest difference appears after sunset. During sunny afternoons, solar power charges the battery instead of exporting everything. Around 4 p.m., the battery starts covering cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning demand.
That timing matters where I live because utility peak rates begin at 4 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. Before installation, our summer bills regularly reached $240. Now they average about $145, despite similar usage.
The savings are not theoretical on a spreadsheet; I notice them in the utility statement. Last month, the battery supplied roughly 18 kWh during peak hours, and my demand from the grid fell noticeably.
I did have one minor scare. After a cloudy weekend, the state of charge reached 8 percent, and the app showed a warning about reserve capacity. I initially assumed the battery had failed.
It turned out the system was simply protecting its backup reserve. I had accidentally changed the minimum reserve setting while exploring the energy monitoring screen. Restoring the setting cleared the warning, and normal charging resumed the next sunny morning.
That small lesson made me appreciate having a usable app, but I still check the physical battery indicator occasionally. Internet monitoring is convenient; it should not be the only way to know whether home backup is available.
For daily life, the battery is quiet and boring, which I consider a success. It makes a hum during charging, but I barely notice it from the hallway. There is no maintenance routine.
