Solution Solar Battery
Running my home on solar plus a battery has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a Growatt hybrid inverter with a 10kWh battery last spring, after watching my evening usage push the bill higher than expected. The panels were already doing well, but without storage, I was sending cheap midday power back to the grid and buying it back during peak hours.
The setup took most of a Saturday. My installer mounted the inverter beside the existing electrical panel, ran new cable to the battery, and added a backup circuit for the refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, and a few lights. I chose the system after comparing options, and the phrase growatt 25 kw appeared repeatedly in my research, although my actual home inverter is smaller. The app was fairly easy to understand: I could see solar generation, battery state of charge, and household consumption in near real time.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. I set the battery to charge from solar first, then discharge during my utility's peak period. Before storage, my summer bills averaged about $190. After installation, they dropped to roughly $125, despite running the air conditioner more often. That is about $65 saved monthly, though cloudy weeks are noticeably worse. I do still buy some grid electricity overnight, but the battery usually covers cooking, laundry, and the evening television.
I had one minor scare when the battery stopped discharging during a storm. The app showed a communication warning, so I checked the router and restarted the inverter Wi-Fi dongle. It came back within ten minutes; no technician visit was needed. Since then, I have kept the battery firmware updated and cleaned dust from the vents. My advice is to match battery capacity to your real evening load, not hopes.
