Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running my home on solar power used to feel like a daily guessing game. Before adding a 10kWh battery storage unit, I sent extra rooftop generation back to the grid during the afternoon, and then bought electricity after dinner when rates were higher. The change has been surprisingly noticeable.
I set it to charge from the solar panels first, then discharge during the utility's peak window. On a normal sunny day, I return from work to find the battery around 70% full. It carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through the evening. I used to watch the meter climb after 5 p.m.; now it barely moves. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 30%, though the exact amount changes with weather and how much air conditioning we use.
The most useful feature is not the headline capacity but the reserve setting. I keep 20% in reserve rather than draining the battery completely. During one short outage last winter, that reserve kept our modem and a few lights running for several hours. A small thing made the system feel practical rather than like an expensive gadget.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment when the app showed “standby” even though the sun was out. I power-cycled the inverter and checked the battery breaker; it resumed charging within a minute. A support message to the growatt company later confirmed it was a temporary communication hiccup, not a hardware failure.
After six months, I am less interested in chasing the biggest possible battery and more interested in predictable energy use. Solar self-consumption is higher, peak-hour grid purchases are lower, and I have more confidence when storms roll through. That consistency matters more to me than impressive capacity numbers. If your household has steady evening demand, battery storage has been a worthwhile upgrade for me.
