Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running my home battery for nearly a year has changed the way I think about electricity. My setup is a Growatt inverter paired with a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, installed beside the garage. I chose it mainly because the growatt price was more manageable than several larger brands, but the practical savings have mattered more than the purchase decision.
Before storage, I used to run the dishwasher, water heater, and washing machine whenever I got home from work. That often meant expensive evening grid electricity. Now the battery charges from my rooftop solar during the afternoon and carries the house through peak hours. On a typical sunny weekday, I see the battery reach 100% by around 2:30 p.m. By bedtime, it is usually down to about 35%, while the refrigerator, lights, internet, and cooking have stayed on normally.
My monthly bill used to average $150 in summer. Recently it has been closer to $70–$90, depending on cloudy weather and how air conditioning we use. I am not pretending the battery eliminates the bill; it simply shifts my solar energy away from costly hours. That difference feels especially worthwhile during heat waves.
I also had one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery offline even though the inverter display looked normal. I restarted the communication dongle and waited ten minutes. The connection returned, and the energy data caught up. Since then, I check the app once a week rather than obsessing over it.
The biggest surprise has been how quiet the system is. There are no fuel deliveries, and I barely notice it running. During an outage last winter, it switched to backup power quickly to keep the lights and Wi-Fi working. That test made the investment feel real, not just like a spreadsheet calculation.
