I installed a small solar battery system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My setup uses a 5kWh LiFePO4 battery, rooftop panels, and a victron inverter 3000w. I did the installation with an electrician, although I handled the wall mounting and cable labeling myself.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and bedtime. Before the battery, our heat pump, cooking, and laundry pushed us into the utility company's peak rate. Now the solar panels charge the battery during the afternoon, and the inverter automatically switches us to stored power when the sun drops. On a normal sunny day, we finish dinner, run the dishwasher, and still have roughly 35 to 45 percent state of charge left. That has cut my evening grid consumption by about 6 to 8 kWh daily. My monthly bill fell from around $185 to $112 during the first full month, though weather and seasonal heating make the savings vary.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me more than the installation manual did. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight. The monitoring app showed normal voltage, but the inverter's minimum state-of-charge setting had reset to 60 percent. I lowered it to 20 percent, restarted the system, and everything worked again. I now keep that setting conservative at 25 percent so we have backup power if an outage arrives.
What I appreciate most is not seeing a dramatic zero-dollar bill; it is having control over when I use electricity. The solar storage system quietly covers the costly hours, and I can check energy production, battery cycling, and household load from my phone. After several months, the battery still reaches its expected capacity, and I have not noticed meaningful performance loss. For my home, this has been a practical investment rather than a gadget alone.
