I installed a 10-kilowatt solar array and a 15-kilowatt-hour LiFePO4 battery last spring, mainly because our electricity rates jump sharply between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Before the battery, I was sending plenty of cheap midday solar back to the grid, then buying power for cooking dinner and running the heat pump later. After six months, the biggest difference is how ordinary evenings feel. I now let the battery charge until about 2 p.m., then set it to cover our peak usage. By bedtime, it usually has dropped to around 35%, rather than sitting full while we're out.
At current rates, that shift saves me roughly $110 to $140 a month, though winter savings are smaller because the heat pump works harder. I check the utility app and battery monitor once or twice a week, not constantly. The numbers aren't perfectly predictable—cloudy days and guests can empty the reserve early—but the system has reduced my peak-hour imports dramatically.
My only real troubleshooting moment came during a week of heavy rain. The battery stopped discharging at 48%, even though the house was using power. I found the inverter had switched to backup reserve mode after a brief grid flicker. Changing the setting back took less than a minute, and the manufacturer’s support team confirmed there was no fault. Since then, I have kept reserve at 25% instead of 40%, which gives me more usable capacity without feeling exposed during outages.
I chose LiFePO4 chemistry because I read that lifep04 battery lifespan can be excellent with moderate cycling and a sensible depth of discharge. I don't pretend to know whether mine will last ten years, but the battery has stayed quiet, cool, and consistent so far. My installer also limited charging to 90% most days, which should reduce unnecessary stress.
