Owning my home battery has changed the way I use our solar panels, mostly because I no longer watch the clock nervously during expensive evening hours.

I chose a 10kWh LiFePO4, often described online with the phrase "solar battery solutions lifepo4", although my installer simply called it a lithium iron phosphate home energy storage unit. It sits in the garage beside the inverter, and the installation took most of a day. The crew mounted the battery, connected the backup loads, and programmed it to charge from excess solar first.

The most noticeable difference is after dinner. Before the battery, my grid meter would start pulling power as soon as the sun dropped. Now the battery runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and sometimes the dishwasher through the evening peak. My utility’s peak rate is nearly twice my overnight rate, so I set the battery to discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. On a normal sunny day, that saves roughly $2 to $3 daily. My monthly bill fell from about $145 to $90 in the first full month, even though our cooking habits stayed the same. That feels more meaningful than the headline capacity number.

There was one small hiccup during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 30% state of charge, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I discovered the installer had enabled a conservative backup reserve for outages. After a quick settings change, it now keeps 20% for emergencies and uses the rest for peak shaving. The app also shows solar generation, battery charge cycles, and daily consumption without being overly complicated.

I am not completely energy independent; several cloudy days still bring grid usage back.
