lifepo4 server rack

I installed a 10kWh lifepo4 server rack battery beside my inverter last spring, and the change was noticeable during the evening peak period. I had been sending excess rooftop solar back to the grid for a modest credit, then buying electricity back at the expensive rate after dinner. Now the battery charges from solar through the afternoon and runs the house from 4:30pm until bedtime. That simple shift has made my monthly bill noticeably calmer, especially in winter when heating and lights overlap.

On a weekday, I see the battery reach 100% around 2pm. It then powers the refrigerator, appliances, Wi-Fi equipment, and kitchen appliances while we’re cooking. My utility app showed a sharp consumption spike between 5pm and 8pm; that spike has largely disappeared. Over three months, my average bill fell from about $165 to $103. The saving varies with cloudy weather, but avoiding peak rates is the part I can see most clearly.

I did have one scare during setup. After moving the battery into place, I noticed the inverter showing “standby” instead of “charging.” The problem was simple: I had left the battery breaker off after checking the cables. Once switched on, I watched the battery management system wake up and begin charging. Since then, I have checked the state of charge and temperature, but I have not needed to reset anything.

What I appreciate most is the quietness. At night, the cooling fan is barely audible from the utility room, and I never notice it in the hallway. The battery gives me backup power during outages too, although I have not tested it. I would add a second rack unit eventually, but for now this solar storage setup is doing exactly what I bought it for: using more of my own solar and wasting less money.
