Solution Solar Battery
I installed my 10kWh home battery last spring, and finally stopped treating my solar panels like a daytime-only investment. The installation was less dramatic than expected. My installer mounted the inverter beside my solar equipment, added a backup subpanel, and spent the afternoon checking settings. I chose lithium iron phosphate batteries because safety and cycle life mattered more than squeezing out the cheapest quote.
Before storage, my electric bill jumped every summer evening. I exported solar power at a low credit during the day, then bought expensive electricity after dinner. Now the battery charges from rooftop solar until late afternoon. Around 4:00 p.m., it starts covering the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and usually my induction cooktop. It switches automatically, so I barely notice anything except the quieter meter and smaller bill.
My average monthly bill fell from about $185 to $95 during the hottest months. That is not a perfect comparison because weather changes, but the savings are obvious. I also like having backup power during short outages. Once, a storm knocked power out for three hours. The battery carried the essentials without the gas generator, and I didn't have to reset clocks afterward.
My only annoyance came in winter. The battery reached its reserve setting early because cloudy days reduced solar production. I initially thought the system was malfunctioning, but the monitoring app showed normal operation. I raised the grid charging allowance slightly and changed the reserve from 30% to 20%. That gave me more usable energy without sacrificing outage protection.
I've seen people search for "life po batteries", and I assume they mean battery life, but the real lesson for me is simple: good settings matter as much as capacity. I would buy storage again, especially if peak rates keep rising.
