After installing a 10kWh home battery beside our inverter, I quickly learned that the real benefit was not independence from the grid, but better control over when we bought power.
Our rooftop solar usually fills the battery by early afternoon. On sunny days, the battery carries the house through dinner, laundry, and the expensive evening peak period. Before storage, our electric oven, heat pump, and lights all ran after work, just as utility rates climbed. Now I set the battery to discharge from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the difference is visible on our monthly bill. In the first full month, our bill dropped by roughly $48, despite similar weather and cooking habits. It is not a dramatic fortune, but over a year it should cover a meaningful part of the system cost.
The app makes this fairly easy to follow. I can see solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid import in near real time. I also keep a handheld clamp meter in the utility closet, because the app occasionally lags by a few minutes. That small habit helped during one confusing evening when the battery seemed to stop discharging. I checked the meter and found the system was actually limiting output because the battery temperature had dipped after a cold snap. The warning was easy to miss, but moving the sensor away from a draft and restarting the inverter cleared it. The battery resumed normally, and I have not seen the issue since.
What I appreciate most is the quiet routine. I do not think about storage during the day; I simply check the charge before running the dishwasher or charging our electric car. For me, storage simply shifts ordinary energy use into cheaper hours. That's the exact kind of practical saving I wanted.
