growatt 10kw hybrid inverter

Running my home on a solar battery has changed the way I think about electricity bills. Last summer I installed a 10kWh lithium battery alongside my existing rooftop panels and a growatt 10kw hybrid inverter. My goal was simple: use less grid power during the expensive evening hours, rather than send all my daytime solar back to the utility.

On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. I have the inverter set to hold enough reserve for an overnight outage, then discharge from about 4pm until 10pm. That schedule has made the most noticeable difference on my bill. Before storage, our evening usage pushed us into the higher time-of-use rate almost every night. Now the dishwasher, refrigerator, lights, and heat-pump water heater draw mostly from stored energy. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 35–45%, depending on weather.

The one hiccup came during cloudy weather. The battery hit its reserve level earlier than expected, and the house switched to grid power just as rates climbed. I thought the solar battery had failed, but the monitoring screen showed operation: there simply was not enough solar generation to recharge it. I lowered the reserve slightly and changed the charge window to prioritize midday charging. Since then, it has behaved predictably.

What I appreciate most is not complete energy independence; it is having control over when I buy electricity. I check the state of charge before running laundry or charging our plug-in hybrid, and I save those loads for afternoons whenever possible. The system has already paid for a part of itself through peak-hour savings, and I expect that improvement to continue as utility rates rise.
