8 months ago I installed a 48v DIY LiFePO4 Battery kit in the utility room beside my inverter. I wanted to use more of my rooftop solar instead of selling cheap daytime excess back to the grid. The installation was less intimidating than I expected: the batteries arrived with cables, fuses, and a monitor, and I spent a Saturday checking every connection twice. My electrician inspected the final connections.
The biggest change is during the evening peak period. Before the battery, my heat pump, dishwasher, and induction hob all pulled from the grid after dinner. Now the battery usually starts at 5:30 p.m. and carries the house until about 10:30. On sunny days it reaches 100 percent by early afternoon. My utility app shows 8–11 kWh less grid use each evening, which has cut my monthly bill by about $32–$45. That's not a fortune, but it makes the system feel worthwhile, particularly when winter rates jump.
I did have one moment in the first week. The monitor showed the battery at 52%, yet the inverter was drawing from the grid. I checked the app and found the battery had stopped discharging because its temperature sensor reported an out-of-range reading. I turned off the inverter, checked the sensor plug, and restarted everything after ten minutes. The reading normalized, and discharge resumed. Since then I added an insulated cover around the battery cabinet. It has not happened again.
What I appreciate most is the quiet routine now. I do not think about electricity prices during dinner, and I can see the remaining capacity from my phone without walking to the utility room. I'm not claiming total energy independence; cloudy stretches still require grid power. But for my actual household, the battery has turned spare solar into predictable evening savings and removed a surprising amount of guesswork from daily energy use. It has made the system feel worthwhile to me.
