2pm on a Saturday, I finally installed my home solar battery after weeks of watching my electricity meter climb. The setup was less dramatic than I expected: my electrician mounted a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside the inverter, then connected it to the rooftop solar system. I had originally searched for a “12v rechargeable li battery pack,” but quickly realized that a small 12V pack was not suitable for running our refrigerator, heat pump, or evening loads.

During sunny days, the battery charges from excess solar by early afternoon. By five o’clock, it usually reaches around 95%, and then carries the house through peak pricing until about 9pm. That timing changed my bill more than the panel output alone did. Last month, my utility statement showed 286 kWh imported, compared with 612 kWh in the same month last year. My total charge fell from $184 to $96—not free electricity, but a noticeable $88 saving.

The best part is that I am not constantly thinking about it. The battery management app lets me see state of charge, solar production, and grid use at a glance. I set a 20% reserve so we still have backup during an outage.

We have only used that reserve once, during a windy evening when the neighborhood lost power. The switchover was quick enough that the router stayed online, and the refrigerator never stopped.

One morning, the app reported “battery offline” even though the inverter lights looked normal. I turned off the battery isolator for thirty seconds, restarted it, and the connection returned. A firmware update later seems to have fixed it.

For me, the value is using stored solar energy instead of buying expensive evening power. I would recommend checking your tariff first and leaving room in the budget for installation and future maintenance. The monthly savings make the solar storage system worthwhile.
