Every evening, I glance at the energy app before bed. Since installing my 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery last spring, our routine has changed more than I expected. The panels still do the daytime work, but the battery decides whether we buy expensive electricity after sunset.
On sunny days, it charges fully by about two o'clock. I set it to cover our 4-9 p.m. peak window, when cooking, laundry, and the heat pump used to push our bill up. Before storage, our evening consumption regularly cost around $1.10–$1.60. On a typical clear day, the battery supplies nearly all of that demand. My smart meter shows the difference clearly: we now average about $0.35–$0.50 for those same hours, even though our habits haven't changed. In practical terms, I'm saving roughly $45 to $60 monthly during the brighter months. That is not a dramatic promise from a brochure; I see it in the utility statements.
The most useful feature has been the reserve setting. I keep 20% in reserve instead of draining the battery completely. It has already carried us through two short outages, keeping the refrigerator, router, and a few lights running.
The only small troubleshooting episode happened in July. I noticed the battery stopped charging at 82%, even with strong sun. After checking the app, I found a temperature warning from the garage, which had become surprisingly hot. I opened the door, cleared dust from the ventilation area, and waited. Within an hour, it resumed charging normally. I learned airflow matters as part of maintenance.
I would recommend getting installer help with the settings. For me, the value is simple: solar power I generate at noon is now useful after dark, and the cellule inside the battery quietly turns sunlight into lower evening bills.
