Solution Solar Battery
Owning a house battery has changed the way I think about our electricity bill, especially after dinner. We installed a 13.5-kWh home battery beside our inverter last spring, and the biggest surprise was not the installation itself, but how quietly it became part of our routine.
During sunny days, our rooftop solar panels fill the battery by early afternoon. Instead of sending every extra kilowatt-hour to the grid, we store it and use that energy after sunset. Our utility’s peak period runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., so the battery carries cooking, lights, television, and the dishwasher.
Before the solar battery, those evening loads came straight from the grid. My average electric bill was about $185 in summer. It dropped to roughly $112 over the last three comparable months, even though our usage barely changed. That is around $73 saved monthly, a difference I can see in my bank account.
The one troubleshooting moment happened during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 28%, although the app showed stored energy. I first suspected a failed inverter, then noticed the system had switched into backup reserve mode after a brief outage. I lowered the reserve from 30% to 20%, and normal operation returned immediately. That lesson made me appreciate having monitoring rather than calling an installer in a panic.
I am still learning the limits of my energy storage. In winter, cloudy weather means less solar generation, so the battery sometimes reaches only 55% by evening. Even then, it covers the expensive early hours and takes pressure off the grid. For me, practical peak-hour savings, not energy independence, are the reason I would choose a house battery again. I still check the app most mornings, but I no longer obsess over every percentage or wonder whether the investment is working for us.
