8 months ago, I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, and the change showed up on my electricity bill almost immediately. Before that, I sent excess midday generation back to the grid for a small credit, then bought power again after dinner at the highest rate.
Now the inverter charges the solar battery through the afternoon, and our house runs from stored energy during peak hours. We cook, run the dishwasher, and charge phones without pulling much from the grid. On cloudy days, the battery still carries us through dinner, although I leave its reserve at 20 percent so it is not completely drained overnight.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the hybrid inverter beside the existing switchboard and added a monitoring app; the electrician spent most of his time labeling circuits and checking cable sizes. I had previously searched for a “280ah lifepo4 caravan” battery, but that portable option did not make sense for our fixed home setup.
The most useful feature has been the live battery state-of-charge screen. One evening, I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of capacity. I initially blamed the solar charge controller, but the problem was simpler: I had accidentally enabled backup-only mode while exploring settings. Switching it back took two minutes, and normal discharge resumed.
The first full month, our bill dropped from about $185 to $92, despite similar usage. The following summer bills stayed near $70 instead of routinely exceeding $140. Those numbers vary with weather and utility rates, but shifting evening consumption has made the biggest difference—not chasing every last solar export credit.
It has made evenings cheaper, quieter, and less dependent on unpredictable grid prices, which is exactly why I recommend storage.
