After six months of watching my rooftop solar panels send excess power back to the grid, I finally installed a 10-kWh solar battery. The main reason was simple: our evening electricity use starts just as solar production disappears.
The installer mounted the battery, added the backup gateway, and configured the monitoring app. I did have to clear a path through the garage, and the Wi-Fi signal was weak enough that setup paused once. A mesh node fixed it, so the battery could report its charge level.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. Before the battery, we regularly used the oven, heat pump, and dishwasher between 5 and 9 p.m., when my utility rate was highest. Now the battery charges from midday solar and automatically covers most of that evening load. On clear summer days, the app shows roughly 7 to 9 kWh discharged each night. That has cut our monthly bill by about $35 to $50, depending on weather and how often we run the air conditioner. It is not a dramatic “no electric bill” result, but the savings are consistent enough to notice.
I also appreciate the quiet control during outages. We had one outage after a storm, and the battery switched to backup power without interrupting the refrigerator or internet router. I did notice that heavy loads are a different story: the water heater stayed off because the battery reserve setting protects against draining too quickly.
One lesson was leaving expansion options open. My inverter supports a parallel battery connection, although I have not added a second unit. I am waiting to see how winter solar production affects the numbers.
For now, the battery has made our solar investment feel more practical: less expensive peak electricity, smoother backup, and fewer frustrating surprises on the monthly bill.
