Solution Solar Inverter
I installed a lithium solar generator in my garage last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. It is a 10-kWh home battery connected to my rooftop solar panels through a hybrid inverter. The setup was less intimidating than expected, although I spent an afternoon labeling cables and checking breaker settings with the electrician.
The biggest difference appeared on the first full week. Each afternoon, the battery charged from surplus solar power instead of sending everything back to the grid. Around 4:00, it stopped charging and waited. When our utility switched to peak pricing at 5:00, the battery began running the refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater. I barely noticed anything except the inverter’s quiet click.
After one month, my bill was about $38 lower than the same month last year, despite using more air conditioning. The savings vary with cloudy weather, but avoiding those expensive evening kilowatt-hours has made the battery worthwhile for me. On sunny days, I often finish dinner with the system still showing 45% charge, which gives me confidence during short outages too.
My one small troubleshooting lesson came during a storm. The battery displayed a communication warning after the internet router rebooted. I initially assumed the solar battery had failed, but the app showed normal voltage and temperature. I power-cycled the router, waited five minutes, and the warning cleared. The system continued powering the house, so I learned that monitoring software alerts are not always hardware problems.
I also changed my habits slightly. Instead of running laundry at 7:00 p.m., I start it at lunchtime while solar production is high. That lets me preserve more stored energy for the evening. I check the app’s charge level, but I no longer worry about it.
